The Journey of Survival

The Great Migration is one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife events on the planet. Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, embark on a perilous journey through the vast plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. This massive migration is driven by the search for fresh grazing lands and water, as the herds follow the rains in a continuous, circular pattern across the ecosystem.

Best Times and Places to Witness the Great Migration

While the Great Migration is a year-round phenomenon, certain times of the year offer unique opportunities to witness specific aspects of this epic journey:

Calving Season (January to March)

This is the best time to witness the wildebeest calving in the southern Serengeti. Thousands of baby wildebeest are born each day, making this a prime time for predator action as lions and hyenas take advantage of the abundance of vulnerable young animals.

Grumeti River Crossing (June to July)

As the herds head north, they face the treacherous Grumeti River. This period is marked by dramatic crossings, with wildebeest attempting to avoid crocodile-infested waters as they make their way to the Masai Mara.

Mara River Crossing (August to October)

Perhaps the most famous part of the migration, the Mara River crossing, is a heart-stopping spectacle. Thousands of wildebeest and zebras gather at the riverbanks, hesitating to jump into the rushing water while crocodiles lurk beneath the surface
