Kilimanjaro Climbing Expedition

7 Days Machame Route

The 7 Days Machame Route, often referred to as the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most popular and scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Known for its diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to barren alpine deserts, and a higher success rate due to better acclimatization, the Machame Route is perfect for adventurous climbers looking to enjoy the beauty of Kilimanjaro.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Morning: After breakfast, you will be transferred from Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate for registration and permits. Once formalities are completed, you will begin your trek through the dense rainforest, surrounded by towering trees, ferns, and unique wildlife.

Afternoon: The trail gradually ascends through the forest zone, providing opportunities to spot various bird species and perhaps even blue monkeys. The air is fresh, and the hike provides a good introduction to the climb.

Evening: Arrive at Machame Camp, located at the edge of the forest zone. Enjoy a hot meal and rest for the night.

Accommodation: Machame Camp (camping).

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Morning: Continue your trek, leaving the rainforest behind as you enter the moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically, with rolling hills and rocky outcrops dominating the landscape.

Afternoon: As you ascend, the trail becomes steeper, with beautiful views of Mount Meru in the distance. Reach the Shira Plateau and continue to Shira Camp, where you’ll have fantastic views of Kibo Peak.

Evening: Settle into camp and enjoy the serene surroundings as you acclimatize.

Accommodation: Shira Camp (camping).

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Morning: Begin the day with a gradual ascent towards Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation located at 4,630 meters. This section is more challenging as the air becomes thinner.

Afternoon: After reaching Lava Tower for a brief rest, descend into the Barranco Valley. The descent allows for acclimatization and provides stunning views of the dramatic landscape, including giant senecio plants.

Evening: Arrive at Barranco Camp, located beneath the iconic Barranco Wall. Enjoy dinner and rest after a long day of trekking.

Accommodation: Barranco Camp (camping).

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Morning: Start the day with a thrilling scramble up the Barranco Wall, often referred to as the “Breakfast Wall.” While it requires some basic climbing, it is manageable and offers incredible views from the top.

Afternoon: After conquering the wall, continue through a series of ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp. The short distance and time allow for further acclimatization.

Evening: Settle into camp and relax with a warm meal and great views.

Accommodation: Karanga Camp (camping).

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Morning: Continue your ascent to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. The terrain is barren, with scree and gravel dominating the landscape.

Afternoon: Arrive at Barafu Camp, where you’ll spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the summit attempt. Review your gear and have an early dinner.

Evening: Go to bed early as you will wake up at midnight to begin the final ascent.

Accommodation: Barafu Camp (camping).

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Midnight: Wake up around midnight and begin your summit attempt. The climb is steep, with switchbacks over loose scree leading up to Stella Point at the crater rim.

Dawn: After reaching Stella Point, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Reach the summit at sunrise for an unforgettable view of the glaciers and surrounding landscape.

Morning: After a brief celebration at the summit, begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a rest.

Afternoon: Continue descending to Mweka Camp, passing through the alpine desert and moorland zones into the lush rainforest.

Evening: Arrive at Mweka Camp for a final dinner and well-earned rest.

Accommodation: Mweka Camp (camping).

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Morning: After breakfast, make your final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail is relatively easy, and the journey is filled with lush greenery and the sounds of the forest.

Afternoon: Arrive at Mweka Gate to receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
