The 6 Days Umbwe Route is one of the shortest and most direct routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Known for its challenging steep ascents, this route is ideal for experienced climbers seeking a less crowded and more adventurous trek. The journey takes you through varied landscapes, including lush rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, culminating at the majestic Uhuru Peak.
Morning: After breakfast and briefing at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, drive to the Umbwe Gate for registration. Begin the trek through the dense montane forest on a narrow, steep path, surrounded by giant trees and undergrowth.
Afternoon: The trail ascends sharply through the rainforest, with breathtaking views along the way. You will reach Umbwe Camp in the late afternoon.
Evening: Settle into your campsite nestled in the forest, enjoy dinner, and rest for the night.
Accommodation: Umbwe Camp (camping).
Morning: Continue your climb through increasingly sparse vegetation as the landscape transitions from rainforest to moorland. The trail remains steep, with dramatic views of the mountain as you ascend.
Afternoon: Arrive at Barranco Camp, situated in a stunning valley below the imposing Barranco Wall. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing to the altitude.
Evening: Enjoy dinner with incredible views of Kibo Peak and prepare for the next day’s challenge.
Accommodation: Barranco Camp (camping).
Morning: Start the day with a thrilling ascent of the Barranco Wall, a steep rock scramble that rewards you with stunning vistas at the top. From here, traverse across a series of ridges and valleys.
Afternoon: Continue to Karanga Camp, where you’ll arrive by mid-afternoon. This is a relatively short day, allowing ample time to rest and acclimatize.
Evening: Relax at the camp, enjoy a warm meal, and take in the views of the towering peaks.
Accommodation: Karanga Camp (camping).
Morning: Depart Karanga Camp and make your way to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The trail is steep and winds through the barren alpine desert.
Afternoon: Arrive at Barafu Camp in the early afternoon. Rest, have an early dinner, and prepare your gear for the summit attempt later that night.
Evening: After a short rest, prepare for a midnight departure to the summit.
Accommodation: Barafu Camp (camping).
Midnight: Begin your summit push around midnight, climbing through the darkness over scree and snow to reach Stella Point at the crater rim.
Dawn: Continue from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, arriving in time to witness a spectacular sunrise.
Morning: After celebrating at the summit and taking photos, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest.
Afternoon: Continue your descent to Mweka Camp through the alpine desert and into the rainforest zone.
Evening: Arrive at Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain, enjoying a well-deserved rest and dinner.
Accommodation: Mweka Camp (camping).
Morning: After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest to the Mweka Gate. Upon arrival, receive your summit certificates.
Afternoon: Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where you will enjoy a celebratory meal and reflect on your incredible achievement.
