Whether you’re looking for a thrilling adventure or preparing for Kilimanjaro, a Mount Meru trek offers an unforgettable experience filled with beautiful landscapes, wildlife, and a challenging summit.
For adventure seekers looking to experience a challenging yet rewarding climb, Mount Meru is the perfect choice. Standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest peak and often regarded as Kilimanjaro's little sister. Located within Arusha National Park, this trek offers breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife, and an exhilarating hiking experience.
Your adventure begins with a transfer from Arusha to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. After park formalities and meeting your armed ranger, start the trek through open grasslands and into the dense rainforest. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife such as buffalo, giraffes, and elephants. As you ascend, you will pass waterfalls and cross rivers, all while enjoying spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The hike ends at Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll spend your first night.
After breakfast, continue your trek through lush forests, gradually climbing higher into the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you make your way to Saddle Hut, located below the stunning summit ridge of Meru. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Meru Crater and the Ash Cone. Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, you can opt for an afternoon hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for further acclimatization and stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape.
Summit day begins with an early wake-up (around midnight) to make the final ascent. The trek to the summit, Socialist Peak, is steep and challenging, but the views at the top make the effort worthwhile. From the summit, marvel at the sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro, the crater below, and the stunning surrounding plains. After celebrating your accomplishment at the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for a rest and then continue further down to Miriakamba Hut for the night.
After a relaxed breakfast, descend back through the forest and grasslands, retracing your steps to Momella Gate. Enjoy the final glimpses of wildlife along the way. At the gate, you’ll say goodbye to your ranger and be transferred back to Arusha, where you can relax and reflect on your Mount Meru trekking adventure.
